TheraClosure helps therapists create a plan that keeps their clients cared for, their loved ones protected, and their ethical obligations fulfilled.

Creating a professional will has been hanging over my head for more than 10 years. Thankfully, a colleague recently recommended TheraClosure and I could not be more grateful. TheraClosure’s process was straightforward, simple, and holistic. I feel immense relief now knowing that my patients, and my legal and ethical responsibilities, are taken care of. I’m so pleased with TheraClosure that I now recommend it to users of my course the Complete Private Practice Toolkit which helps mental health clinicians start or improve a private practice. TheraClosure has thought of everything related to professional wills and practice executor services—there’s truly nothing else like it out there.

I am deeply grateful for this service and your guidance. I feel very relieved to know that my clients and my loved ones will be provided for in a professional and caring way!... Your process was easy to use. I greatly appreciated Dr Forman's guidance and patience.... And TheraClosure is very affordable!

In a recent therapy session, one of my patients brought up the NYT article, "The Ghost in the Therapy Room" about a man who struggled to process the sudden and unexpected death of his therapist. After she missed their scheduled session, he learned of her death through a colleague of his. (He too is a mental health professional.) My patient expressed her concerns after reading the article: What if something happened to me? How would she know? What would she do if I was gone? This is something I thought of when I started my private practice and asked my attorney about, but the process he described was complex. I couldn't think of who I could ask to take over the burden of notifying all of my patients and taking responsibility for their records. So I did nothing. In reading the NYT article, I learned that there is now a solution. With TheraClosure's help, I now have a comprehensive emergency plan in place which includes a Professional Will and names the specific tasks of a Practice Executor. It is a huge relief to know my patients will be notified and cared for if something happens to me.

I had watched panic rise in my spouse's face when I started to discuss the clinical and ethical steps to care for my clients if I were incapacitated. From recent experience we know how overwhelmed grieving families already feel and I wanted to remove as much of the burden from my friends and family as I could. I thought about the fees for consulting someone about a professional will and more importantly, what the emotional and fiscal cost would be to my family to hire professional assistance to get things sorted if I were incapacitated, and it was worth it to me. At $38 per month once established, I see it as a kind of professional "life" insurance-- the goal being to take care of my family (and my clients).
Suzanne Fremont, Ph.D.
The burden of being a professional executor is very high. I assumed the role of professional executor after the loss of my sister and close colleague. I soon had no choice but to take a leave of absence from my private practice because I was beyond my ability to cope. While being a professional executor for a family member may be uncommon, we do tend to ask our closest colleagues to be our executors. This can put them in a real bind because they must process their own grief while assuming the professional executor role.
Ben Rutt, Ph.D.
This was a profound experience and I want to thank you for all the care you gave to me. It means a lot to me.

I cannot speak more highly of my consultation with Dr. Robyn Miller. I contacted Robyn after putting off drafting and even thinking about my professional will for the umpteenth time. Robyn was extremely knowledgeable about the process and gave me a fantastic framework and advice to think through how to approach the whole process. I appreciated her thoughtfulness around all the clinical nuances of this process. Most of all, she was extremely compassionate and supportive in helping me think through my emotional barriers to identifying executors and moving forward with drafting the contract. Meeting with Robyn eliminated so much stress and uncertainty for me and would highly recommend her services.

When my wife faced a sudden stage IV cancer diagnosis, Robyn was the only person she trusted to serve as her practice executor. During a horrific time, it brought Kim comfort knowing her clients were in good hands—and that the kids and I were protected as well.

I’m truly very happy that I signed up for TheraClosure and have already spoken with several of my colleagues about the service. This week I added the paragraph you suggested to my Informed Consent and began the process of talking with clients about TheraClosure. I have to say, the response has been almost unanimous: many clients said they were genuinely touched by this step, with several saying things like, “Thank you for thinking about my well-being.” Quite a few shared that they had wondered what would happen if something happened to me, but hadn’t known how to bring it up, and they were grateful for the opportunity to talk about it openly.

Our CEO & founder, Dr. Robyn Miller, discusses her personal experience being a professional executor and how it led to her starting TheraClosure.
We make it simple for psychotherapists to create a thoughtful Professional Will, and we learn about your practice and then serve, if needed, as your Practice Executor, administering your detailed directive with our caring expertise.

We take time to learn about you and your practice. Together, we consider best practices and devise a plan for your clients' well-being and for the closing of your business in the event of a sudden incapacitation. A legally reviewed contractual Professional Will is created, naming TheraClosure as your Practice Executor.
In order for TheraClosure to fulfill duties of the Professional Executor, we would need remote access to your patient schedule, contact information, and your patient records. We can gain this access in the following ways: (1) an electronic health record (EHR) system, (2) another web-based system, (3) a digital file transmitted by someone you designate, (4) paper records that have been digitized (which we can help with).
If called upon, our team specializes in compassionate, clinically-informed notification to patients. Trained in grief counseling, our therapists provide support and facilitate personalized referrals for each client. We ensure that no patient slips through the cracks, and we use both your and our referral lists to connect each patient to a qualified therapist suited to individual requirements.
Our goal is to provide you with peace of mind that you have closed your practice with the same degree of conscientiousness, ethical compliance, and compassion with which you provided care for so many years. We assist you in enjoying a full retirement while protecting your legacy. TheraClosure is uniquely positioned to help you with the ethical and legal obligations that remain even when you stop practicing, by:
-Taking custody of your medical records
-Providing secure, encrypted, HIPAA-compliant storage
-Assuming all retention, access and transfer responsibilities of the record custodian.
-Assisting past clients with requests for referrals should they reach out seeking your
counsel.
As licensed psychotherapists ourselves, we are available to interact with your former clients in a clinically-informed manner, ensuring their needs are addressed in a sensitive, efficient, and compassionate way.
We secure the confidentiality of psychotherapy records in compliance with ethical standards and retain them according to legal requirements. We facilitate notification and transfer of records as needed for patient care.
We provide you with an enterprise-grade password manager for the online services your practice uses, including your electronic health records system. Your passwords will be kept up-to-date, safely encrypted, and only made available to TheraClosure to administer your will in the event of your incapacitation.
We discontinue your business accounts, notifying licensure boards and malpractice insurance, and consulting with your Personal Executor about remaining tasks like your office lease and office bills.
For those who bill using EHRs, we issue statements to your active clients and to insurance so that your estate can collect for services you have provided. We also help your clients by providing them with statements to submit for reimbursement.
