In a recent therapy session, one of my patients brought up the NYT article, "The Ghost in the Therapy Room" about a man who struggled to process the sudden and unexpected death of his therapist. After she missed their scheduled session, he learned of her death through a colleague of his. (He too is a mental health professional.) My patient expressed her concerns after reading the article: What if something happened to me? How would she know? What would she do if I was gone? This is something I thought of when I started my private practice and asked my attorney about, but the process he described was complex. I couldn't think of who I could ask to take over the burden of notifying all of my patients and taking responsibility for their records. So I did nothing. In reading the NYT article, I learned that there is now a solution. I had watched panic rise in my spouse's face when I started to discuss the clinical and ethical steps to care for my clients if I were incapacitated.
